Earl grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. After he and his wife, Debbie, were married for 2 1/2 years, the call of God into career ministry led them to Lancaster Bible College in Pennsylvania and a B.S. in Bible in 1986, where he has also completed the course work for a M.A. in Leadership.

The need to learn how to develop reproducing lifestyle disciples in the mountains of Western New York during his first ministry opportunity connected him with the Navigators Church Discipleship Ministries. That introduction grew to a continuing role as Associate Staff and leader trainer with them following their move to Maryland in 1988. It has expanded during pastoral ministries there in three BCM/D churches through 2007 as well as in regional, U.S., and international urban ministry leadership development opportunities in Kingston, Jamiaca and Nassau, Bahamas.

As MMBA Consultant for Spiritual Formation, Earl has the blessing of walking alongside pastors and congregations in their ongoing journey together towards a closer walk with Christ and a greater redemptive connection with their communities. An expanding network of relationship opportunities has grown into the joy of coaching and equipping pastors and congregations in the association, convention and national settings through the ReFocus process.

The Grays have lived in Crownsville since 2000, and their son, Earl III, is a junior at Towson University where he is an Electronic Media and Film major.
