Notes from the business meeting of Columbia Baptist Fellowship Sunday 13 September 2009 PASTORS REPORTS: Rev. Jordan: CBF is continuing to attend meetings of P.A.T.H. (People Acting Together in Howard). CBF is not yet a member of this group. We are learning about its goals and missions and have shown willingness to volunteer for select activities. Example: Volunteers are needed to sign-up Howard County residents for the County health care program. CBF could supply a few volunteers to staff a table distributing information to County residents on this program. For the CBF Sept. 2009 - Aug. 2010 theme of "worship", there are seven classes set-up to participate in the worship study---three on Sunday, one Tuesday and one Wednesday. One may purchase the study guide for $6 at the CBF kiosk following morning service. Karen Canfield has been coordinating this program. **Some upcoming special events at CBF include: * Recognition of Fran C. Brown, former RFG head, on Sun. 15 November with a possible Sat. evening fellowship the night before for those persons wishing to catch-up with Fran. * An idea to celebrate both the works/talents of CBF members and their national heritage was brought up for discussion. This could be some time on a Wednesday evening fellowship or a spot in Sunday service. The goal is to show the talent (writing, photography, quilting, ...) and diversity (different cultures and ethnic hertitages) of the Fellowship. * OMI items include the announcement that "Nurturing Nest Montessori School" is now open in The Meeting House, and an "OMI Mixer" is being discussed as a way in which to get the congregational families of The Meeting House to interact with one another a bit more. As part of flu season preparedness, OMI has purchased several hand sanitizers which will be placed in the building for people to use. Rev. Johnson: Outreach to young people at the Forest Ridge Apartments has been going well. The backyard Bible study seemed to be a success. There has been an interest expressed in getting some of the children to Sunday School classes at CBF. One option was to use the CBF van to drive the children over to the church for Sunday School with the clear understanding that the parents would pick them up. [Addendum: The parents expressed a preference to bring the children both to and from the church themselves.] Some of the CBF Youth have been most helpful in conducting events at the backyard Bible study and also in assisting with CBF Children's church during the 10:00 a.m. worship time. Rev. McCustion-Kahl: The marriage communication enrichment seminar is scheduled for Sun. 1 Nov. 7:00-8:30 p.m. in room 202. This seminar will be conducted by Dr. Phil Robison and jointly sponsored by CBF and St. John the Evangelist RC Church. COMMITTEE REPORTS: The Treasurer's Report: The Treasurer's report indicated that while CBF is giving more than this time one year ago the incoming funds are still slightly short of that which is needed to meet budget requirements. CBF has paid some of its Missions giving committment but payroll and facilities expenses must be met as well. Church Clerk: The CBF Church Clerk is recommending for membership into CBF by letter Caroline Batson and Dawn Howard-Davis. Each person was accepted for membership in the church. Church Admin: The Church Admin requested guidance from those present at the business meeting as to whether or not to revisit the CBF By-Laws. The area of membership in CBF was discussed. It was agreed to have the CAC look at the By-Laws and to bring back any recommendations to the Church Council. Deacons: The summer KINfolk meetings were successful. Missions & Ministry: The Angel Tree Project will appear at CBF again this year after a years absence. This ministry encourages people in CBF to purchase specific items for a child whose parent is incarcerated. Those items are presented to the child at Christmas in the parents behalf. Evangelism: CBF will be participating in Oakland Mills "Cultural Fair" on Saturday 10 October. There will be a booth at which CBF will have volunteers. Details coming. Please contact Nancy Wisthoff for more info.
